CONSUMER FRAUD

INDUSTRY:
Banking

OVERVIEW

A low-level manager at a branch of an international bank was offering client account information for sale on the Darknet. Batches of account details were being purchased by a drug cartel, who connected the client accounts to easily obtainable personal details (like addresses) to facilitate anonymous transactions, allowing a significant amount of funds to move across international borders without leaving a signature.

RESULTS

With the bank’s reputation on the line and the potential for resulting economic loss, we knew that we needed to act quickly to prevent widespread, long-term damage. After following these illegal sales on the Darknet, the perpetrator was identified and the operation was swiftly and discreetly eradicated.

BRAND REPUTATION RISK

Apparel

OVERVIEW

The CEO of a major athletic clothing brand announced public support of a political candidate, and forces who opposed the candidate began including the name of the CEO in their negative social media campaigns.

RESULTS

Negative sentiment regarding the CEO’s political affiliations had the potential to lead to a decline in sales, so DeepSeek launched a web intelligence program to gather intel that would help the company combat these sentiments. After weeks of targeted monitoring, we uncovered a much more significant threat: a notorious gang had begun purchasing and wearing the company’s uniquely identifiable apparel and using it as a symbol of gang affiliation, posing a significant risk to the company’s image through this negative association. The company was able to pull the apparel in question from circulation in cities where the gang operated, and take other active steps to ensure that their products and brand identity were disassociated from the gang.

COUNTERTERRORISM AND CRIME

INDUSTRY:
Mega Event

OVERVIEW

A European football league hosted a finals game at a large stadium in a major European city. Over 75,000 spectators purchased tickets and hundreds of thousands of fans without tickets were expected to arrive from around Europe and internationally to experience the event in the hosting city. The league took the growing terrorist threat throughout Europe very seriously and was interested in tracking internet chatter which could alert to possible attacks at the match. They were also interested in tracking fans and other parties planning large gatherings with the potential to turn into violent events, such as riots and hooliganism. Finally, the league asked to map criminal activity regarding the sales of counterfeit tickets and merchandise in and around the stadium. With thousands of lives at stake and the risk of potential economic damage to consider, it was essential for the league to be extremely proactive about security.

RESULTS

Months prior to the match, we began monitoring conversations about the game and were
able to map significant threat contributors in the host city. Using virtual agents to penetrate fan clubs
and other groups on the Darknet, we discovered plans to throw hazardous materials onto the field
during the game. The league was able to pinpoint the identities of the organizers and also the types
of materials that would need to be smuggled into the stadium. This information assisted local police
and security teams in screening and planning for the match.
